Just because change is inevitable in life doesn’t make it easy. In fact change brought upon by your will can be one of the most difficult things to do. The challenge is that many of us do not recognize how behavioral change actually happens. We may believe that massive action is necessary to make the changes we want to make. We hear it all the time that we must go 10x, burn the ships, and go all in on the next strategy, diet, or new habit. We start with so much enthusiasm but once the novelty has worn off it becomes difficult to sustain the change as our old paradigm kicks and we revert back to our old ways.
You are not to blame. Our body’s are set up to follow the path of least resistance and when we have established habits or patterns they are easier to follow for sure! But we know that the most rewarding feelings and things in life come from noble struggle and growth.
So what are the 3 necessary components of behavioral change?
This is taken from my years as a senior trainer for sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking prevention work. Our job was to mobilize entire communities to create lasting change and safer spaces. We had to make sure that we understood the 3 necessary components of behavioral change.
1) Intrinsic motivation- You must want to change from within first before it can become a reality. External motivation and/or coercision may create change for a short duration, but it will not necessarily last long.
2) Manageable increments- You can’t expect to go to the gym and blast out 24 hours of straight cardio and lifting and think that will create lasting change. It will more often than not lead to burnout.
3) Consistent iterations- Small CONSISTENT action > than massive 1x action. It is better to practice a piano 15 minutes each day than to practice 3 hours on 1 day and then wait several more days before you practice again. The same applies to marketing to people who want to sell their house fast or are in need of help during the probate process. You must be consistent with your follow up and your message” “Take these 3 parts of behavioral change seriously will give you a framework to use when you are trying to make substantial difference or go in a new direction in your life.
